Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this charming family navigate their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
