England's Assistant Coach Shares The Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

Ten years back, the England assistant coach featured for Accrington Stanley. Now, he's dedicated supporting the England manager win the World Cup in 2026. His journey from player to coach commenced through volunteering with the youth team. He recalls, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He discovered his calling.

Rapid Rise

His advancement is incredible. Commencing as Paul Cook’s assistant, he established a reputation for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams took him to top European clubs, plus he took on international positions across multiple countries. His players include stars like top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the top according to him.

“All begins with a vision … Yet I'm convinced that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a structured plan that allows us to have the best chance.”

Obsession with Details

Obsession, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. Their strategies feature player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and building a true team. He stresses “Team England” and rejects terms such as "break".

“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” Barry notes. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and they're pushed that it’s a breather.”

Ambitious Trainers

Barry describes himself along with the manager as extremely driven. “We want to dominate each element of play,” Barry affirms. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and that’s what we spend many of our days on. Our responsibility not just to keep up of changes and to lead and set new standards. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We have 50 days with the players prior to the World Cup. We need to execute a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in that period. We need to progress from idea to information to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process for effective use in that window, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds among them. We must dedicate moments communicating regularly, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, we have no chance.”

World Cup Qualifiers

He is getting ready on the last two of World Cup qualifiers – against Serbia at Wembley and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured qualification by winning all six games without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; on the contrary. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, to gain more impetus.

“We are both certain that our playing approach should represent everything that is good about the Premier League,” he comments. “The physicality, the versatility, the strength, the honesty. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It should feel like a cape and not body armour.

“To make it light, we have to give them an approach that enables them to play freely similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and focus more on action.

“You can gain psychological edges for managers at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, especially in England's top flight. Everybody has so much information currently. They understand tactics – mid-blocks, deep blocks. Our aim is to focus on accelerating the game through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

The coach's thirst for development is relentless. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, since his group contained luminaries including former players. To enhance his abilities, he went into difficult settings imaginable to practise giving them. Including a prison in Liverpool, where he also took inmates in a football drill.

Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard was among those impressed and he brought Barry to his team at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it said plenty that the team dismissed nearly all assistants except Barry.

Lampard’s successor at Chelsea was Tuchel, and shortly after, they secured European glory. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued with Potter. However, when Tuchel returned with Bayern, he recruited Barry from Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
