Preparations for Trump-Putin Talks Postponed Days Following Hungarian Capital Talks Suggested

There are "no preparations" for American leader Donald Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has stated.

Recently Trump indicated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Budapest in the coming fortnight to address the ongoing hostilities.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the administration clarified the two had had a "positive" call and that a meeting was not "required".

The White House withheld further information on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

Trump had discussed a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Various sources suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with sources indicating the president had urged him to give up large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday Trump endorsed a ceasefire proposal backed by Kyiv and European leaders to pause the war on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut the way it is," he said.

Russia has frequently resisted against halting the current line of contact.

Moscow was only interested in "enduring stability", Lavrov stated on this week, suggesting that pausing conflict would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Political Perspectives

The "root causes" of the war needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat stated, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of extensive requirements that include the acceptance of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a non-starter for Ukraine and its Western allies.

Zelensky commented talks regarding the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the delivery of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday preceded rumors that the United States was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could possibly hit Russian territory.

Zelensky stated it was the weapons consideration that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The talk about the weapons systems had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in negotiations", he commented.
