Severe Downpours Worsen Circumstances for Evacuated Residents of Gaza, Officials Warn

Heavy precipitation over the last seven days have intensified the already dire living conditions of the many hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians in the Gaza Strip, as stated by relief groups.

"Terrible" Night Creates Severe Dangers

A official characterized the previous night's conditions as "terrible", with downpours so heavy that around 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the terrain.

"These conditions was exceptionally difficult for the families. The downpours were so intense... And the winds were so strong," said the spokesperson.

Authorities voice grave concern that young ones living in makeshift shelters in damp clothing will contract hypothermia and additional illnesses.

Deaths and Significant Damage

Medical officials have stated that one baby has succumbed from hypothermia and a minimum of 11 other people have been killed in building collapses due to the harsh conditions.

Further statements indicate a greater death toll. Spokespeople said that numerous residential buildings had fully given way and scores had been partly destroyed.

Aid Efforts Seen as Insufficient

Organizations have increased deliveries of tents, blankets and clothes after the truce commenced, but they have said there is still not enough aid reaching those in need.

"Officials are working relentlessly to deliver that aid and to distribute it, but the scale of the requirements is so enormous that we still have thousands of people and children who are truly enduring hardship every night," warned one representative.

Long-Term Challenges and Truce Terms

The second phase of the ceasefire includes proposals for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the pullback of troops, and other conditions.

Aid bodies have highlighted the need for "increased and sustained aid to respond to urgent and long-term needs."

The hostilities was sparked by an offensive in October 2023. Subsequent military operations have led to a substantial number of lives lost in the area, based on medical reports.
