Should My Best Friend Stop Attempting to Fix Me Up on Dates?
For this intimate dilemma, two companions share their very different perspectives on friendship, pressure, and the value of being single.
The Prosecution: Haile
People are treated like a lonely soul, yet I am fine by myself. I’m not interested in seeing people at the moment.”
I don't consider myself anti-love. I have been in relationships, however at present, I'm the lone unmarried companion in my circle of female friends and I’m being regarded as a pathetic situation.
I’m not interested in dating currently, particularly after ending things with someone a twelve months past. However my best friend, Whitney, keeps telling me to jump back into the dating pool. I understand she is merely showing concern for me, but sometimes I think it's more about about what is convenient for her than what’s right for me.
Whitney excels in partnerships. One could call her I’d call a perpetual romantic. Immediately after one romance finishes, another is waiting in the wings. But I, in contrast, am content alone. I broke up with my ex as we had become disconnected. He happened to be only my second beau. It was hard at first, but then I came to enjoy my own company again. This marks the first time in ages when I have experienced truly serene, with no compromises.
Whitney said she desires me to be in a relationship so I can be more included in her world. She enjoys throwing romantic duo gatherings. Yet couples aren’t the only people who can participate in dinner parties.
Then there’s the whole family planning talk. She’ll drop remarks for example: “Avoid postponing it too long, Haile.” I think the reason is I once said I hoped for kids with my ex, yet what is certain now?
Perhaps this is due to our backgrounds are in rather religious east African families. But our age is 28 and I get an ample amount of this from my mum. I have no need for it from a friend as well, despite the fact it may be well-meaning.
Presently, it’s like I have turned off the part of my brain reserved for romance. I don’t know at what point it will turn on again, or even if I actually desire it to.
I do not wish to date someone simply because it is easy, and I don’t need rescuing. I cherish my loved ones, but if I be asked another individual ask, “How’s your love life?” I will snap. For what reason must those who are solo perpetually be required to account for their existence?
I don’t see remaining unattached as being stuck in a holding area. It represents a conscious selection.
Whitney's Argument: Whitney
“Haile’s happiest when she is in love. I’m glad she has attained peace, but I worry she is sealing herself off.”
I have known Haile since we were 16, therefore I have witnessed her at her happiest, which is during periods she is in love. Subsequent to her breakup, she went through a tough patch and currently she has become overly autonomous, something that is not ideal, from my perspective. She owns her private residence and car, and states: “For what purpose do I need a partner for?” Yet I recall how joyful she was when she was looked after by her ex. I am pleased she has discovered peace now, and I respect that she has grown into so independent, yet occasionally I feel she’s confusing comfort with satisfaction.
Admittedly that I used to be a perpetual romantic, yet currently I am in a happy relationship. I desire Haile to be in one as well, since subsequently we can go out more. Her former partner happened to be really good friends with my current boyfriend, and it merely caused everything better for everyone. I extended an invitation to Haile to a recent my previous evening meals, yet she said she had no desire to be present because she wouldn’t know anyone.
When I said Haile would gain socially from possessing a partner, My aim was not to hint she’s not enough by herself – My point was simply that I long for observing her out there engaging and having fun. I arranged dates with a few common companions because I thought she would perhaps appreciate it. I acknowledge that it may have led her to experience under duress.
Furthermore my comment about kids originated in concern, and not criticism. I understand she desires children eventually, as we discussed that in our youth, and she recently talked about it while she was with her ex. It's possible I apply too much pressure due to the fact I am aware her value is so much.
In the event that she’s genuinely satisfied by herself, then of course I need to respect that. I just want her to have the finest existence. I do get that it’s annoying for unattached individuals to be questioned about their {love lives|rom
