The English Team to Launch Euro 2028 Campaign at City’s Home Ground
The England national team will initiate their UEFA Euro 2028 adventure at the the home of Manchester City, assuming they achieve the relatively straightforward entry for a tournament staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.
The Etihad Stadium has not staged an English men’s match since May 2016, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is highly likely to stage the Three Lions for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.
The team are scheduled to play their final two group matches at Wembley, but, if they top the preliminary round, their knockout stage opener would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Securing the runner-up spot would mean starting the elimination stage at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Competition Launch and Demonstration
The event was inaugurated at an ceremony in central London on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from the tournament organizers and the organizing bodies were barracked as they arrived the venue by about 50 protesters, who urged Israel to be kicked out from international football because of the situation in Gaza.
Placards were raised with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Event Fixture List
The first match of the European Championship will be held at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a game that will involve Wales if they qualify.
The national stadium will host both semi-finals and the title decider, which will be held on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at 5pm.
It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to family audiences and help engage a broader range of audiences.
Participating Countries
The Ireland are set to play their first game at the Dublin Arena and the Tartan Army would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.
The national sides of all four hosts will take part in the qualifying tournament; two reserved places will be set aside for any that do not reach the finals through the qualification path.
Venues and Elimination Phase
The Birmingham venue and The North London arena complete the event’s nine venues. Each one will hold at least one elimination game, with the last eight played at each country’s national stadium.
The qualification draw will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a tournament location last year when it was revealed the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on December 6, 2026.
Leadership Comment
