The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose legacy on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
