As he approaches his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his future at Arsenal is directly connected to delivering trophies.

Reflecting on: Six Years in Charge

The Spanish coach assumed control on the 20th of December in 2019 and managed to steer the team to an cup win a short time later. However, that first major trophy remains his sole top-tier trophy following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Yes,” Arteta responded when questioned about staying beyond 2027. “But it’s about today. And a lot of things need to fall into place in the near future as well to earn the right.”

He will mark the landmark with a game facing Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal played immediately following his appointment was announced.

League Position and Pressure

As trailing Manchester City taking on West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal face being knocked off first place in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This comes despite Arteta overseeing a squad that has been plagued by more than a century of fitness issues over the course of last season.

Arteta currently has 18 months remaining on the extension he agreed to in 2024, but is acutely aware that he must deliver in the immediate future.

Earning the Right

Arteta elaborated, emphasizing the constant necessity to validate his position. “In my view a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you address the media, how you go into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

He stated further, commending the unwavering support from the hierarchy, yet identifying the squad's dedication as the key factor. “In the final analysis, the most important ones are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, hunger for knowledge and give their all to the team.”

Injury Concerns

Arsenal faces the upcoming game managing an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a strain that is likely to sideline him for several weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Despite the fitness woes and the immense scrutiny, Arteta believes the club's “focus and dialogue” are profoundly distinct from when he first arrived.

The manager referenced the record-breaking achievements as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Examine the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the caliber we've reached.”

In closing, the manager stated, “That is a level that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our ambition is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
