UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman containing multiple personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct souls, each with unique fears and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes show the protagonist navigating a desolate church.

An Environment of Individual Horror

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."

The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers where their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one standing could be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
