The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had netted only a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
