What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
No fewer than 16 people perished and over 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, officials have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the moments before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with five in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
